Not only did they visit the Silverstone Wing to see the new pit and paddock complex but they also saw behind the scenes of the preparations for Silverstone’s Brticar 24 hour race taking place this weekend. Anna, their interpreter did a great job conveying all the exciting goings-on into Polish for them.

As an RTC, programmes focus on the opportunities of using iLife, the multi-media software that comes with every Mac. This includes iMovie, GarageBand, iPhoto and iDVD. Comic Life and I Can Animate software will also be included in the 2011/12 programme to showcase comic making and stop-motion animation creation. Silverstone RTC Apple Education

Last week the year 10 pupils toured Silverstone, discovering the history, new track features and the day-to-day activities of a race circuit. Whilst on the tour pupils were required to listen carefully to information given by Trevor and Vicki. Prompting their memories of Silverstone and the terminology used around the circuit helped to them to generate ideas of what they could place on their comic . Comic Life software was used to showcase their photographs and write captions, speech and thought bubbles.

The inspirational Peter Ford, Northamptonshire County Council’s Harnessing Technologies Manager for Schools, led a number of interactive sessions showcasing web 2.0 technologies that can be used in the classroom. The group of head teachers, teachers and ICT technicians experimented with:

- Primary Wall (sticky-note tool to collaborate in the classroom)

- Screenr (a web-based screen recorder to create and share screencasts)

- Audioboo (record and share audio files).

During the event Vicki also took some notes using Penzu, an online journal where all websites, blogs, and information of interest were recorded.

The pupils commenced with an introductory day to get to know the centre, circuit and centre staff. The twelve year 9 pupils were first tasked with creating a press pass ready to access Silverstone Circuit for a tour later in the day. Using PhotoBooth the students took photographs of themselves and navigated their way about their MacBoook to save, rename and store their photos. A Comic Life template was then used to insert their name and chosen photos. These were printed, placed in the pass holder and sat comfortably on a lanyard.

A tour of Silverstone Circuit, home of British Motorsport, was next on the schedule. Students hopped on the coach to commence the 7 mile round trip around the Northamptonshire/Buckinghamshire circuit. Tasked with a tour quiz, pupils used their listening, reading and writing skills to complete the questions. The group visited the National Pit Straight, race control, Silverstone’s Experience Centre and saw the new Silverstone Wing in all its glory. A great day was enjoyed by all!

We’re looking forward to seeing the pupils next week for the first of their four after-school sessions at Silverstone Study Centre.

The day focused on forces and the work of Sir Isaac Newton. Pupils are divided into three groups to complete a series of challenges which were set around the study centre, taking it in turns to face one of the many tasks. Laws of motion were challenged with a ramp and skateboard, air-resistance with toy parachutes and gravity with a Meccano set. Pupils also created an air-powered car made from cardboard, straws and a balloon.
