All cars on the road today contribute to climate change because their engines burn fuel and therefore produce carbon dioxide (CO2) every time we drive. Yet we can easily reduce these emissions and save money too.

Act on C02

That is the message from the Department for Transport’s Act on CO2 campaign. Their advert on the television caught my attention and I took a look at their website.

Based on my annual mileage, I’ve calculated that I could save £400 per year by implementing their tips - not to be sniffed at!

The site will be a useful addition to our developing module on ‘Motoring, Motor Sport and the Environment’. Another useful site is the Vehicle Certification Agency (VCA), that provides a data on new car fuel consumption and exhaust emissions figures.

We will also naturally be exploring with students the interesting environmental opportunities and challenges raised by motor racing. Jonny attended the recent ‘Greener Motorsport’ workshop and came back with talk of Kinetic Energy Recovery Systems, waste management and biodiversity. It will be interesting to see how the students  assess and balance the thrills of motor sport with its responsibility to the environment. A Ustream TV debate is definitely in the offing.
